The CIBC recently released a report stating that people jobs in Canada are difficult to find primarily because workers are skilled in areas other the fields needed to fill the vacancies. Canada is home to a labour mismatch according to a report called The Haves and Have Nots of Canada’s Labour Market.
Individuals are having a hard time finding jobs, and jobs are having a hard time finding employees. The lists on the report consist of 25 jobs with labour shortages and 20 jobs with an excess of labour. Occupations that are badly in need of experienced workers include mining, healthcare workers like phlebotomists and engineers. Pharmacy techs, physician assistants and nurses are also in demand. The occupations that have need for employees include teachers, hospitality and manufacturing.
The 25 occupations with labour shortages are seeing a decrease in the unemployment rate, and the wages are increasing. These occupations are seeing the average unemployment rate at just over 1%, and the salary is increasing by a yearly rate of 3.9%.
Unfortunately, things keep declining for the 20 occupations with labour surpluses. The unemployment rate is increasing, and the wages are decreasing. These jobs are responsible for 16% of the unemployment, and they did not see an increase in wages over the past year.
Numerous people in Canada are too qualified for the jobs that are available. Their higher degree is in a field that is not needed. Their credentials are notable; however, they are not qualified for the job. Therefore, they will not be able to obtain the salary that they desire.
The companies in Canada need to increase the training, so individuals with dissimilar backgrounds are brought into the fields that need employees. The employees are very capable; however, they just need to be trained in certain areas.
Some people predict that things will not improve anytime soon because the qualifications, age and experience will become outdated. Around 250,000 people in Canada have not had a job for at least six months. A majority of these individuals are over the age of 45, so companies will probably not help them find employment. Most businesses are choosing to train immigrants or recent college graduates, so older people are left out in the cold.
